Okay, let's take the colon.
Is this a correct usage of the colon?
On the camping trip, I intend to take: a shovel, a hammar, a saw, and a hoe.
Do you think this is correct?
Well, you're wrong.
If you omit the listing of tools, what do you have?
On the camping trip, I intend to take:
Is that a complete thought?
No, it isn't. Something is missing. What are you taking? So you have to say what you're taking before the colon.
For instance ...
On the camping trip, I intend to take several tools: a shovel, a hammar, a saw, and a hoe.
See the difference? The listing after the colon gives additional information regarding "tools," more specific information.
RULE: You never place a colon in the middle of an independent clause, or complete thought. Okay, let's try another one ...
My sister likes: ice cream, fudge, and vanilla cake.
What do you think?
First you have My sister likes:
Does that make sense?
No, it doesn't.
How about My sister likes sweets: ice cream, fudge, and vanilla cake. Do you see what I mean?
Okay, please give a few examples of using the colon for listing.

Reply with quote | #3 | Becca, are these okay?
My father has a problem with gambling: craps, blackjack and poker.
George does not like his homework: math, chemistry, science and sewing.

I apologize for the neglect of this forum I've displayed. But I have been totally inundated with other matters and will have to continue this after the first of the year ... specifically near the middle of January. I'm off to Belgium next week till then. __________________ Luv, Becca b.
